This programme is aimed at the range of health professionals involved in the management of lower limb musculoskeletal pathologies arising from various sources, including physiotherapists, orthotists, podiatrists and rheumatology / orthopaedic specialist nurses.
A part-time delivery pattern, involving one week-long block of attendance per 20 credit module. With 60 credits per year representing the normal progression route, this equates with a commitment of 3 attendance weeks per year.
The programme is flexible, and modules can be accessed individually for CPD purposes. A major emphasis of the programme is on integration of theory and practice, and as such assessment involves the use of learning diaries, case studies, essays and OSCE examinations.
Year One
Focuses on understanding and diagnosing lower limb musculoskeletal disorders.
Modules:
- Research skills and reflective practice (In line with the emphasis on integrating theory and practice)
- Gait analysis
- Pathological basis of musculoskeletal disorders
- Musculoskeletal examination and diagnosis
Year Two
Focuses on management strategies and their evaluation
Modules
- Musculoskeletal therapeutics
- Outcomes measurement
- Research methods
Year Three
Research dissertation
The programme is offered within the Cardiff School of Health Sciences at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. Podiatry and Biomedical Sciences staff from UWIC will be joined by Consultants in orthopaedics, rheumatology and radiology in delivering the programme.
