Medical Student Bursaries

Five bursaries are available to UK medical students to attend Rheumatology 2012 in Glasgow, 1-3 May.

 

The winners will receive:

  • Complimentary registration to Rheumatology 2012
  • Two nights’ bed and breakfast accommodation
  • Economy class travel expenses. (Please note that any additional expenses are not included in the bursary.)
  • The opportunity to present your work as a poster at Rheumatology 2012 and discuss the winning work with interested colleagues

 

Rules and eligibility

  • Applicants do not have to be BSR members
  • Open to UK medical students at any stage of their training but would be most suitable for those in their clinical years (years 3 – 5)

 

How to apply

Submission deadline is Friday 18 November 2011. Entrants will be notified by 16 December 2011. Please note that the abstract site will close at midnight and abstracts will not be accepted after this time.

Applications must be submitted via the online abstract submission system.

To apply submit:
An original piece of work written by the applicant, which is relevant to rheumatology or a related discipline. Help from a supervisor/teacher is acceptable.

The application can be:

  • Case report and discussion
  • Elective report
  • Original research
  • History of medicine

 

The submission can be clinical or scientific in nature, and should cover the following questions, within the structure of the online abstract submission form:

  • Why did you decide on your chosen topic?
  • What evidence in the literature was there to support this?
  • How was the work carried out?
  • How may this work change your approach to caring for patients’ musculoskeletal disease / improve care for patients in the future?

  • The abstract should be structured into the following sections:
a. Title (clearly indicating the nature of the investigation)
b. Background
c. Methods
d. Results
e. Conclusions

Applications will be assessed against the following criteria by a panel from BSR:

  • Originality
  • Structure
  • Presentation
  • Use of an evidence base
  • Clarity of discussion and conclusions
  • Relevance to care of patients with musculoskeletal disease
