BSR response to the Health Select Committee report on MMC
The British Society of Rheumatology (BSR) welcomes the Health Select Committee’s report on Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) programme.
The BSR particularly supports the recommendation to introduce a more flexible system of training. As stated in our evidence to the Health Select Committee (HSC), we believe in the long run that it will not be conducive to force trainees to select their specialties at such an early stage. We need a much more flexible system with a separation of the core medical training process and the specialist training.
We are also pleased that the report acknowledged the intense competition for posts, which created great upset for many junior doctors.
Deborah Bax, BSR President said, “The combination of radical changes to both training programmes and applications for training posts has caused untold misery to junior doctors. We welcome recommendations to ensure junior doctors trained in the UK and funded by UK taxpayers have the opportunity to access speciality training”.
