BSR Statement on EMEA Annoucement on COX II Inhibitors
BSR notes recommendations made by the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) today that reinforced warnings should accompany all Cox II inhibitors, including celecoxib, etoricoxib, lumiracoxib and parecoxib, and that use of Bextra (valedecoxib) should be suspended for one year.
We would urge all rheumatologists to follow the recommendations set out by the EMEA which can be found at http://www.emea.eu.int/Cox2inhibitors.htm.
If patients are concerned we recommend that they contact their GP or rheumatologist as soon as possible to discuss their treatment. Alternatively, contact the Arthritis Care helpline (0808 800 4050, open from 12pm to 4pm Monday to Friday) or the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society helpline (0845 458 3969, open 9.30am to 4pm Monday to Friday).
