NICE Clinical Guideline (CG79)

NICE has published its decision to not update the Rheumatoid Arthritis guideline (CG79) at this time.

Dr Chris Deighton (BSR President-Elect) remarked:

"BSR and other stakeholders felt there might be a case with new evidence to suggest that the use of anti-CCP should be broadened for diagnostic and prognostic purposes, and that it would be useful to have an update including the new EULAR/ACR classification criteria for early RA, but agreed with NICE that there was no major new evidence to lead to a change in recommendations. This decision wil be reviewed again in 2014. If the rheumatology community wants to improve the guidelines it will be necessary to generate the evidence in the meantime."

Quality Standards in RA

NICE is working hard on producing Quality Standards and will develop them for five musculoskeletal topics including RA. These will be incorporated into the first 150 topics of the Core Library in the National Outcomes Framework. BSR has been involved in suggesting to NICE key Quality Standards for RA that are based largely on the NICE RA guidelines. A formal process to develop these by NICE is expected in 2012.

Guideline Development Group Recruitment

The National Clinical Guidelines Centre (NCGC), hosted by the Royal College of Physicians and commissioned by NICE, to develop clinical guidelines and quality standards for osteoarthritis is recruiting health professionals to the guideline development group (GDG). The multi-disciplinary CDG will requires rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, physiotherapists, nurses, GPs and others.

A commitment to the work of GDG of 24 months from 27 February 2012 with meetings every five to six weeks is required.

Closing date for applications is 9 January 2012.
