BSR statement on alcohol and arthritis
May 2008
BSR is pleased that The Karolinska Institute has carried out research into the risk factors associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). RA, an auto-immune disease which causes swelling of the joints, affects 0.8% of the UK adult population. It can be incredibly painful and disabling, and can affect a person’s ability to carry out everyday tasks. Research into the subject can only be positive.
However, while we welcome research into the effects of moderate alcohol intake and the reduced risk of developing RA, we would like to see further studies so as to properly understand the effects. We would strongly caution against excessive drinking.
