We are pleased to formally endorse the newly-launched Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Rheumatology Competency Framework.

As there was previously no national criteria or competency framework for rheumatology nurse specialist (RNS) roles, job titles and role responsibilities have varied greatly. We're very happy to see this long overdue framework published - something we called for in our 'Specialist nursing in Rheumatology: The State of Play' report. We're grateful to the RCN and all other stakeholders for lobbying for this, ensuring nurse specialist-led care is effective and safe.

What is the framework?

The framework defines standards of care and provides a competency and role development framework for RNS'. It enables employers, employees and most importantly patients to have clarity about the role of the RNS and their ability to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care.

Why is it necessary?

It provides clarity and guidance around the competency and abilities of those delivering care, and addresses the need for a clear training pathway for RNS'. This is important, because the RNS role has grown over the years and nurses are undertaking more advanced practice.

How have we contributed?

Members acted as key reps for the project (particularly Di Finney, the lead author for the framework), and it was then peer-reviewed by our education committee and BHPR section council. As a result of their positive feedback, we formally endorsed the document.

What are the key takeaways?

  • This is a useful guide for development, assessing competencies and appraisal processes

  • It clearly addresses the need for training for nurses and methods for upskilling

  • All parties (employers, employees and patients) will have clarity of what is expected from each band of the role

How does our work align to the framework?

We already run a well-received practical course for rheumatology specialist nurses, and we're working with lead author DI Finney to ensure we provide the identified training opportunities.

How will BSR support rheumatology nurse specialists in the future?

The framework gives a clear training pathway, which means more demand on training budgets. We know funding is already an issue for nurses, and we will continue to offer funding and support through our bursary scheme. In addition, we'll explore more digital training opportunities and resources for members, many of which will be tailored to RNS'.
