This free online course is designed to support nurses providing telephone advice, addressing a key service pressure and confidence gap. The programme is practical, flexible, and immediately useful on shift, covering essential skills such as call structure, communication strategies, clinical red flags, FAQs, flare management, and wellbeing. Developed by nurses, for nurses, the training reinforces nurse-led learning while equipping participants with resources they can use straight away.
The course is designed for nurses in advice line roles, but is open to all who want to strengthen their confidence in telephone-based patient care.
Learning objectives:
By engaging with the modules, participants will be able to:
- Deliver safe, structured, and effective telephone consultations.
- Manage advice line calls confidently, including triage and escalation.
- Recognise and apply best practice in flare management and other common patient queries.
- Signpost patients to trusted resources and organisations that support self-management.
- Identify strategies for maintaining personal wellbeing and resilience while managing advice lines.
- Understand the role of the wider MDT in supporting advice line services.
Learning is delivered through a flexible mix of self-guided online modules, webinars, podcasts, and reading resources.
