We’re on the lookout for innovative projects to enter our Best Practice Awards. The awards celebrate excellence and showcase aspects of rheumatology that drive improvements in patient care. As applications open, we speak to our President and judge for the awards, Dr Sanjeev Patel.
Why are the Best Practice Awards so important?
Good work is happening all the time in rheumatology and going unrecognised, so these awards are a chance to showcase the brilliant initiatives that don’t get the acknowledgment they deserve. People are working hard in lots of pioneering ways and it’s important that we promote and share this. It’s been a particularly challenging time for everyone, so it’s essential that we shine a light on the achievements of rheumatology teams.
What are the criteria for entry?
We’re looking for projects that can evidence positive impact in clinical effectiveness, that are cost-effective, and ideas that could potentially be implemented by others.
What are you looking forward to as a judge?
This is my first time as a judge so I’m looking forward to seeing and celebrating the innovation happening all around the UK. Alongside the other judges, I’ll be looking out for projects that are using resources well, are patient focussed and those tackling challenging areas of healthcare.
Why should members consider entering?
Having that recognition of a job well done is incredibly important. Also, external recognition by a sector body like BSR often helps encourage internal validation as well. It’s a positive thing from a career enhancement perspective, and for patients it gives them the understanding that their hospital is a trailblazer. You’re also helping to share best practice among your peers and colleagues. Your ideas can help others facing similar challenges and it’s vital that good ideas are shared.
Do you have any top tips?
Think about how your service is improving patient care. This might be through a patient pathway or improving patient experience. The judges will be looking for objectives and outcomes, so make sure that you can demonstrate these in your application.
Do you have any other words of encouragement?
All applications are welcome. If you feel you have an interesting project to share or a solution to a challenge, we want to hear from you. Entering isn’t complex and it is a good experience to go through. It’s a meaningful opportunity to showcase your work, be rewarded for creative thinking and share best practice throughout the NHS.
