With sustainability embedded at the heart of BSR’s strategy, there’s no better time to share how we’re shaping a greener future for BSR Annual Conference 2026.
From 28 to 30 April 2026, we will welcome over 2,000 delegates to the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) and online for the UK’s leading rheumatology event. This award-winning hybrid conference brings together consultants, trainees, nurses, allied health professionals, and those working in paediatric and adolescent rheumatology for three days of learning, knowledge sharing, networking and innovation.
Hybrid by design
Since introducing a hybrid format in 2022, we have seen clear benefits. Most delegates attend in person, with others joining online and engaging fully in live sessions. This flexible model widens access while reducing travel-related emissions.
We remain committed to hybrid delivery in 2026, even where costs are higher, because it supports both our community and our environmental goals. All sessions will also be available on demand for six months, extending the educational impact without requiring additional travel.
Reducing waste and carbon
We continue to cut waste by prioritising digital solutions. Our event app replaces printed programmes, posters and exhibitor materials, significantly reducing paper use and shipment-related emissions. Digital signage will be used throughout the venue to further limit single-use materials.
We are also taking a more considered approach to catering at Annual Conference 2026. Lunch menus are designed with sustainability in mind, prioritising seasonal ingredients, reducing high-carbon options and clearly labelling lower-carbon choices to help delegates make informed decisions.
Working closely with the venue, we monitor and measure the carbon impact of our catering to reduce food-related emissions year on year. By planning portions carefully and focusing on lower-carbon menus, we aim to minimise waste while still ensuring there is plenty of choice for delegates. Many sponsors now measure the carbon footprint of their individual stands, work with local contractors to reduce travel, and commit to reusing materials at future events. This collective effort is helping to drive real change.
A venue aligned with our ambition
Returning to the Scottish Event Campus means working with a venue that shares our commitment to sustainability. The SEC benefits from Scotland’s increasingly renewable energy grid and offers excellent public transport connections, making low-carbon travel more accessible for delegates.
Travel smarter
We encourage all delegates to plan their journey using the free You Smart Thing travel planning tool to explore lower-carbon options and track the sustainability of their trip.
Travelling by train? Registered attendees can access an exclusive 15% discount with Avanti West Coast on selected Advance fares to and from Glasgow between 27 April and 1 May 2026. Choosing rail can significantly reduce emissions compared with flying or driving.
If public transport is not possible, consider car sharing. Bring a refillable water bottle, as refill points will be available throughout the venue. When booking accommodation, look for hotels with recognised sustainability accreditations.
Annual Conference 2026 features more than 70 sessions and over 200 speakers, alongside practical workshops, symposia, networking, social events and a vibrant exhibition.
Book now to secure your all access pass and be part of a conference that supports both the future of rheumatology and the future of sustainable events.
