This course provides an evidence-based update on the diagnosis and management of gout and crystal arthropathies.

Participants will learn strategies for optimal urate-lowering therapy, management of complex cases with comorbidities, and the use of imaging modalities such as ultrasound and dual-energy CT.

The course also covers alternative gout treatments and current approaches to calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course you will be able to...
  • Become aware of the latest evidence to inform optimum urate-lowering therapy and learn how to achieve it in clinical practice
  • Learn how to manage gout in patients with complex comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease, organ transplantation and cardiovascular disease
  • Understand therapeutic options to treat gout other than allopurinol including febuxostat and uricosuric drugs
  • Understand the role of ultrasound and dual-energy CT (DECT) in the diagnosis of crystal arthritis, their specific imaging features and diagnostic utility
  • Understand which metabolic conditions predispose to calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition and which patients should be screened for these
  • Understand options for pharmacological management of complex calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition
  • Become aware of the evidence to inform options for gut flare management and flare prophylaxis
Who should attend?
Rheumatology consultants, rheumatology trainees and allied health professionals, as well as GPs, trainees and physicians in other specialties.
