The secondary care doctor role on Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) governing bodies has been a requirement for CCGs since April 2013. The CCGs, whilst following the board guidance provided, have moulded the position to meet their particular needs resulting in heterogeneity.

We conducted a series of interviews with rheumatologists who had chosen to take up the position, in addition to speaking to GPs with a Special Interest (GPwSIs) on CCG governing bodies, to explore their experiences and gauging their opinion of how the secondary care doctor role functioned in their CCG.

Despite the diversity of the role, consistent themes emerged and so we have developed a position statement on the topic which includes a series of recommendations to ensure the role of the secondary care doctor on a CCG Board can reach its full potential.
