President and vice president (health professionals)

We will be seeking nominations for president and vice-president paediatric and adolescent rheumatology in November 2026. If you’re interested in standing, please get in touch.

The president and vice presidents are the three most senior elected officer roles at BSR. As well as being key ambassadors for the Society, our president and vice presidents act as the voice of our members across the whole multi-disciplinary rheumatology team. Our president and vice presidents oversee our organisational strategy, directly influencing how we improve best practice and shape the future of rheumatology in line with our mission.

Impact of the role:

As an elected ambassador for BSR and its members, our president and vice presidents have the visibility and influence to promote and shape the Society’s work.

Vice President health professionals – candidates must be a current member of BSR, practising as a nurse, AHP, pharmacist, psychologist or physician associate working in an NHS rheumatology service or clinical academia.

Become a Trustee

  • Member trustee
  • Lay trustee

We elect member trustees to our Board to provide strategic direction and expertise across a variety of areas and champion BSR’s values. Enquire here.

Impact of the role: Our Board of Trustees advise and contribute their knowledge, experience and expertise in a way that directly influences the strategic direction of the Society. Through this, the Board keep our members needs at the forefront, ensuring that BSR delivers work that supports the rheumatology profession and improves patient care.

We may also appoint up to four lay trustees to join the BSR Board. Lay trustees are not practising in the field of rheumatology and are sought for their expertise in different areas such as finance or strategic communications.

Eligibility criteria: We look for individuals who share our values and have an interest in supporting BSR. You don’t need to have prior experience of being a Trustee nor have taken part in other committees.

Minimum time commitment: Approximately one day per month, including attending the quarterly board meeting.

Length of term: Three years

MDT Advisory Council

The MDT Advisory Council advises on issues across the multi-disciplinary team in paediatric, adolescent and adult rheumatology. It is key in sharing local developments and identifying how BSR can effectively support members.

It is made up of clinicians, nurses, allied health professionals (AHPs), pharmacists, psychologists, physician associates and other health professionals representing the paediatric, adolescent and adult rheumatology community, from each of our seven English regions and the devolved nations. Impact of the role:

Our guidelines steering group offers a unique opportunity to influence what guidelines we produce, how they are developed and to input into guideline content before they are published.

Or, if you are interested in working directly on the development of the next BSR guideline, join a guideline working group.

Our volunteers on these groups represent many different professions and bring together a diverse range of expertise and experience, to help ensure our guidelines continue to shape rheumatology care.

We welcome anyone based in the UK with experience in rheumatology to join our guideline working groups. To get involved with our guidelines steering group, you must be a member of BSR.

You can express your interest in joining either of these groups at any time.

For the guidelines steering group there are two half-day meetings per year, and members are active in reviewing draft guidelines and guideline scope documents regularly via email. For guideline working groups, this varies but on average there are around four meetings per year, with additional tasks for the members who take responsibilities in the tasks of the systematic literature review and writing of guideline manuscripts.
