Ultrasound for rheumatology practice

This two day practical course has been designed to help develop your ability to scan peripheral joints. You'll undertake a comprehensive review of regional musculoskeletal ultrasound and develop clinical and technical knowledge.

Taught in small groups with plenty of opportunity to gain hands-on experience, each module will include standard machine craft core knowledge and will be supported by online learning before and after the face-to-face course.

This blended learning programme aims to support you in your lifelong learning.

The two modules covered this April will be:

  • Upper limb

  • Lower limb

Who should attend? 

The two day course is suitable for all BSR members who have already completed an introductory or basic ultrasound course, and have some experience scanning wrist and hand, and foot and ankle, wishing to extend their skills in performing ultrasound examination of the peripheral joints.

Suitable previously completed courses would include IA or Hot joint module, EULAR or BSR introductory course. This course is open to all BSR members.


By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • Perform comprehensive scan of hip, knee, foot and ankle joints

  • Perform comprehensive scan of hand and wrist, elbow and shoulder joints

  • Optimise ultrasound settings for grey scale image and for power Doppler

  • Identify common artifiacts and correct interpretation of obtained ultrasound images

  • Demonstrate ultrasound findings of synovitis, joint effusion, tenosynovitis, erosions, osteophytes and enthesitis

  • Quantify synovial inflammation

Cancellation terms and conditions

Cancellations received in writing by the British Society for Rheumatology events team no later than 5pm on Friday 29 March will be entitled to a full refund minus a cancellation fee of £25 for members and £40 for non-members. We regret that we cannot offer refunds for cancellations received after this date. Substitutions may be made but this will incur a £25 administration fee.
