After a successful pilot event in Newcastle hosted by Dr Martin Lee in 2018, we recently delivered our first series of Rheumatology Taster Days across England, Scotland and Wales.
The taster days were a huge achievement, with more than 80 students and junior doctors across the whole multi-disciplinary team attending the four events held in London, Pontyclun, Dundee and Newcastle. We worked closely with local convenors to deliver a fun and informative programme, with over 90% of sessions scoring more than 4 out of 5.
Attendees were asked to rate their understanding of rheumatology as a career both before and after the events; 100% of delegates said their understanding and knowledge had increased as a result of attending the day. We are thrilled with these results, as we really wanted to showcase what a career in rheumatology looks like from rheumatologists themselves and get their honest view. Many attendees also said that they would be more likely to consider rheumatology as a specialty after hearing about what a rewarding and fulfilling career it can be.
Attendees really valued the workshop-style sessions and the opportunity to network with fellow attendees and speakers. One session at the Pontyclun taster day had a real buzz in the room; many of the attendees said that Dr Ceril Rhys-Dillon's 'day in the life of a rheumatologist' in the form of her Instagram story was their "favourite part of the event".
We have started planning the taster days for next year, continuing to inspire the next generation of rheumatologists. As part of our new strategy in 2020, and this featuring strongly in member research, promoting a career in rheumatology is a key focus for us over the next three years. If you would like to host a taster day in your area then please get in touch with the events team, we would love to have you on board!
