Overview

The roles of pharmacists specialising in adult and paediatric rheumatology are multifaceted, valuable to MDTs and a highly rewarding career choice. Over the last decade there has been an increase in dedicated specialist pharmacist roles embedded within rheumatology MDTs, but there remains considerable variation in the work undertaken by rheumatology pharmacists.

Only 50% of rheumatology pharmacists surveyed had a job plan, and nearly a quarter (24%) reported it was never reviewed. This BSR guidance, together with the RPS Core Advanced Pharmacist and Consultant Pharmacist Curricula, will enable rheumatology pharmacists to compose, review and update their job plans in discussion with specialty leads and line managers so they can balance the demands of the service with their individual professional development.
