We have launched a new video series that highlights the key information you’ll find in BSR clinical guidelines. The Rheumatology Roundtable will feature panels of experts and patients sharing their unique insights into the latest evidence-based guidance for clinical practice.

The series kicks off with a roundtable discussion with members of the working group for the 2022 BSR guideline on the treatment and management of myositis.

In this first episode of the series, Prof Hector Chinoy, who co-led the development of the guideline, outlines the stepwise process of treatment recommended that will provide standardisation for treatment of the disease. He also provides advice on the nuances of drug availability in the UK.

Dr Liza McCann, who also co-led the development of the guideline, highlights the importance of exercise, led and monitored by specialist physiotherapists and occupational therapists, as well as the need to address psychological wellbeing as an integral part of treatment, in parallel with pharmacological therapies.

Phoebe Rushe, a patient representative in the working group, describes the mental burden of having a disease, the potential effect of medications on mental health, and how this is addressed in the new guidance so that it is routinely considered.

The roundtable is also an opportunity to highlight gaps in the evidence and areas for future research.

Dr Marwan Bukhari, Editor-in-Chief of Rheumatology, said, “The new Rheumatology Roundtable series will be a great way to easily find out what’s new in a guideline and how this will affect clinical practice and patients”.
