What has been your experience of sitting on a BSR committee? Any particular highlights?
From the very start, BSR has been incredibly welcoming and supportive. I was a little nervous at first, as this was a new challenge for me, but I quickly realised how much BSR values the contribution of specialist nurses.
Working alongside a diverse group of clinicians from across the four nations—and patients with lived experience—has been truly enlightening. The collaboration and shared learning have made my role both rewarding and enjoyable.
How has sitting on a committee benefitted you personally and professionally?
Being part of a BSR committee has given a tremendous boost to my professional development. It’s helped me realise leadership skills that had perhaps been dormant and brought them to the forefront.
My confidence has grown through committee work and project involvement. Time management, teamwork, interpersonal and communication skills have all strengthened.
More importantly, I’ve gained a new appreciation of rheumatology from a strategic perspective—understanding how policy development and service design shape the care we deliver.
What would you say to nurses considering standing for a BSR committee or Council?
Your voice as a specialist nurse is incredibly valuable. I would strongly recommend putting yourself forward for election.
Having a diverse committee—with representatives from across the multidisciplinary team—ensures all viewpoints are heard, leading to stronger decision-making and innovation.
The insight nurses bring helps strengthen policy, service development and patient care. It’s a highly rewarding experience that will enhance your current practice and professional growth.
I have no hesitation in encouraging other nurses to get involved with BSR committees.
