Rheumatology is a complex specialty that covers more than 200 conditions, from muscle pain through to rheumatoid arthritis. Every year, one out of every five people in the UK will visit their GP with musculoskeletal systems, while rheumatology is the third biggest area of spending within the NHS.
This factsheet is an introduction to rheumatology – what conditions it covers, how many people it affects, and what the rheumatology service looks like. It covers a number of key rheumatic conditions, the make up of the multidisciplinary team, and an overview of the rheumatology pathway.
