Rheumatology departments across the UK have adapted quickly to the COVID-19 pandemic, finding new ways of working via remote consultations.

As we move into the pandemic's recovery and restore phase, remote consultations will need to continue for some time to ensure safe social distancing. Our Clinical Affairs Committee has produced principles for remote consultations to assist now, but to also look to the future and see how rheumatology as a specialty can embrace new ways of working.

These principles cover:

  • appropriateness of a remote consultation given patient factors, type of appointment and purpose of appointment

  • preparation before appointment

  • considerations during the consultation

  • documentation of the consultation
