The Clinical Excellence Awards reward NHS consultants and academic GPs who perform ‘over and above’ the standard expected of their role. Every year, we support member applications and we are pleased to announce the successful candidates from the 2018 round.

New award winners

Professor Ariane Herrick – Silver award

Professor Kimme Hyrich

“has made an excellent contribution to the science and practice of rheumatology. She is Chief Investigator on our Biologics Registers for Rheumatoid Arthritis, and her collaborative approach and vision has ensured the success of the register. She directs the Biologics Studies Group at Manchester University, which hosts some of the largest treatment registers for rheumatic diseases in the world. Kimme’s research has directly led to improvements in the medical care for inflammatory arthritis, informing national and international clinical guidelines."


Professor Ariane Herrick
“has made outstanding contributions in rheumatology, including the establishment of a scleroderma centre of excellence, which is the UK’s second largest. She is the President of the Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium and was Chief Investigator on many (including international) studies. Ariane is also Vice President of Scleroderma and Raynaud’s UK.”

Professor John Isaacs
“is an undisputed leader in rheumatology and has developed an internationally-acclaimed rheumatology service in North East England. John has built a superb team, comprising rising stars and widely recognised leaders in Newcastle, and has thereby generated an international centre of excellence for rheumatology. He leads a highly innovative experimental medicine research programme, delivering world leading development of tolerogenic therapies and precision medicine. Few academic physicians in British rheumatology have combined clinical service innovation, research and leadership as successfully as he has.”
