The BSR is delighted to reveal the three winners of the 2022 Funding Call.

In 2022, the BSR is investing more than ever in supporting the research aspirations of members who have little or no prior research experience with over £90k in funding awarded.

This year, the winning applicants will conduct research into improving care for patients with Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA), Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA), and musculoskeletal conditions by using data to assess the efficacy of care.

Our three winners this year are:

Patricia Harkins, St James Hospital, Dublin, Ireland.

Patricia, our first ever winning member from outside of the UK, will be investigating the prevalence of frailty and its association with clinical outcomes in Giant Cell Arteritis.

Roanna Burgess, School of Medicine, Keele University.

Roanna will focus on how we measure and identify variation in MSK care from the beginning of the patient pathway across MSK conditions

Ryan Hum, Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, The University of Manchester & The Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology, Manchester Royal Infirmary, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

Ryan will be researching the identification of serum proteomic biomarker signatures correlated with ultrasound assessed joint inflammation in PsA.

We wish Patricia, Roanna and Ryan well with the important work ahead of them.
