Podiatrists, physiotherapists and rheumatologists from UK NHS trusts and local health boards are invited to host a NIHR HTA-funded GREAT trial recruiting patients with early rheumatoid arthritis affecting the foot/ankle.
The GREAT trial will evaluate whether gait rehabilitation results in any additional benefit, compared to usual treatment alone in a randomised trial which includes an internal pilot study for evaluating recruitment rates.
Physiotherapists and podiatrists will deliver the intervention over 12 weeks and combine gait circuit training for completion at home alongside behavioural techniques for promoting self-management.
Glasgow Caledonian University Senior Research Fellow Dr Gordon Hendry, a co-investigator on the trial, said: "This trial provides a unique training element and skills which combine both gait rehabilitation exercises and behaviour. The first two years of rheumatoid arthritis is often when patients are most vulnerable. Our early feasibility study has confirmed this trial is feasible, acceptable and safe."
