Michael Mason award:

Garrod award:

Dr Thomas McDonnell, University College London.

Abstract award winners


Thank you to everyone who submitted an abstract to this year’s conference. We received an impressive total of 459 abstracts this year.


Our Heberden committee reviewed all the abstracts submitted and we’re pleased to announce the winners of the following abstracts awards:

Young Investigator Award

Junjie Peng, University College London, for their abstract ‘Predicting cardiovascular disease risk in children and adolescents with juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus using APPLE (Atherosclerosis Prevention in Paediatric Lupus Erythematosus) clinical trial cohort’.

Zixing Tian, University of Manchester, for their abstract ‘No difference in risk of myocardial infarction among patients receiving either IL6 or TNF inhibitors for rheumatoid arthritis’.

Nurse and Allied Health Professional  Award

Dr Carol McCrum, University of Brighton and Canberra Health Service Australia, for their clinical work for the abstract ‘Peri-procedural management and incidence of bleeding events following musculoskeletal injections and aspirations in people on anticoagulation and antiplatelet therapy’.

Paul Bacon Vasculitis Award

Dr Gary Reynolds, Newcastle University, for their abstract ‘Transcriptional control of intimal hyperplasia in GCA’.

Student Award in association with Versus Arthritis

Rhea Suribhatla, University of Oxford, for their abstract ‘Systematic review of the clinical effectiveness of Tixagevimab/Cilgavimab for prophylaxis of COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients’.

Ummaz Nadeem, Lancaster Medical School, for their abstract ‘Bone mineral density predicts fractures when measured in more than one area: results from a large observational cohort’.

Melanie Chin Ning Liu, University of Leeds, for their abstract ‘DNA methylation of the tumour necrosis factor gene as a biomarker of diagnosis in early rheumatoid arthritis patients’.

Christine Addae-Kyereme, University of Aberdeen, for their abstract 'Disease activity, comorbidities and functional status predict treatment response to biologic and targeted synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs in psoriatic arthritis'.

Paediatric Award

Dr Eve Smith, University of Liverpool, for their abstract ‘Development of a Childhood Lupus Low Disease Activity State definition: recommendations from the International Childhood Lupus Treat-to-Target Task Force’.
