As we lead up to this year’s Annual Conference in Manchester, we caught up with our President, Dr Sanjeev Patel so he could tell us about his programme highlights. Read more below.

As always, I'm looking forward to the keynote talks, with this year’s Heberden Round delivered by Prof Lucy Wedderburn and the Heberden Oration by Prof Tim Spector.

There are also sessions on advances in therapies that we use to treat our patients. This includes new therapies in SLE, how to optimise adherence to medication which is essential to ensure good outcomes, and what I think will be a really interesting session on pharmacy in rheumatology, which will highlight how we can work with pharmacy colleagues to deliver excellent care.

This year we also have sessions that explore non-articular manifestations of rheumatological diseases which is really important for us all to be aware of and understand how to manage, including pulmonary manifestations of rheumatoid conditions and optimising management of lung and heart disease in systemic sclerosis.

There is also much for members of the MDT that manage children and younger people, including the sessions on autoinflammatory disease in children, emergencies in paediatric and adolescent rheumatology, SLE in the adolescent, and the Barbara Ansell Address which will this year be delivered by Prof Athimalaipet Ramanan, followed by the paediatric and adolescent oral abstracts.

Working together with patients is vital to ensure good outcomes and so this year we have several sessions that focus on this critical area; patients as partners, how do we facilitate patients with RMD’s to remain in work SIG, and a session on how to help our patients with regards to mental wellbeing: no health without mental health.

Finally we have worked with EULAR to bring to you a session describing the latest EULAR recommendations in RA, Axial SpA and ANCA associated vasculitis. This will be a must-attend session for those of us who treat patients with these conditions.
