Find out about cures and diagnoses from the 1500s to the present day
How should you treat a gout patient with ‘blood’ humour?
How has a cat left its permanent mark in rheumatology history?
To celebrate 40 years of BSR, we’re bringing books with an ’83 theme to this year’s Annual Conference. Stop by the BSR stand to meet the current librarian, Paul Sanders, and discover books from the 1500s to the present day, including a 1500s guide to treating gout depending on ‘humour’; diagrams detailing the earliest known account of acupuncture; and some intriguing ‘cures’ from controversial authors. There is also a collection of books from 1983, the birth year for BSR!
The Heberden Library was established by William Copeman and Eric Bywaters, and holds a collection of books covering the history of rheumatism, gout and allied conditions. Interested readers and researchers are welcome to contact us to access the library’s content, which is held at the Royal College of Physicians and Bride House. We also welcome suggestions for donations.
